Serum Institute of India has stopped the trails of COVID-19 vaccine of the Oxford University-AstraZeneca. This decision was taken by the company on Thursday. The trial starts in India when the British-Swedish the drugmaker will restart in their country.
The Drug Controller's General of
India (DGCI) asked to pull the trails in India from the Serum Institute. DGCI
asked the serum institute that they not informed that postponed the clinical
trials of pharma giant AstraZeneca in the other countries.
Based on the instruction from DGCI the trails will be paused. The central drug regulator taken this decision on September 8. The reason behind this mess was the unexplained illness encountered during the clinical trials in one of the participant from the United Kingdom.
AstraZeneca has not expressed the exact information
about the possible side effect to the media but expressed it as unexplained
illness.
The vaccine, developed by Oxford University was
tested in people from Britain, and in Brazil and South Africa. The
worries are extended as President Donald Trump demanded the fast approval of the vaccine from the US Food and Drug Administration before the elections.
The serum institute received show-case
notice from the Drug regulator of India as they didn’t mention the reason for the pause of clinical
trials in the USA, UK, Brazil and South Africa from Oxford University-AstraZeneca.
Finally, the US National Institutes of Health Director Francis Collins expressed that the COVID-19 vaccine trial was paused due to a “spinal cord problem in the participant". He further expressed that “this is a single severe adverse event but currently no data is available whether it is having any direct link with the use of vaccine” at the Senate committee Wednesday.
Serum Institute of India amalgamated with AstraZeneca for the supply of COVID-19 vaccine to low-and-middle-income countries' behalf of Oxford University-AstraZeneca. Currently, Serum Institute has recruited 1600 volunteers from the age of 18-55 to participate in the trial.
The chief executive officer from AstraZeneca claimed that the University of Oxford could come up with the vaccine until the end of the year. Based upon these obstructions in vaccine development, the probability of getting vaccine in the year 2020 is diminishing.
