The outbreak of coronavirus has
crossed the threshold limits resulting in the increase in death rate worldwide.
The patients recovered from COVID-19 are the luckiest person in the world. Currently, one new situation has developed called a hole in the lung. In other words, it is
called Post-COVID fibrosis.
The new issue is raised
- COVID-19
cases in severe conditions resulting in long-lasting damage to the lungs.
It is developing necessities for surgery on lungs for recovery of
patient or even organ transplants.
- The majority
death rate observed in the case of COVID-19 is seen in older.
- Fibrosis
cases are even seen in the young people who survived from COVID-19 disease with
long-lasting complications of lungs.
- A lung
transplantation was carried out to 20-year-old COVID-19 survivor in
Chicago due to post-COVID fibrosis.
The new term is introduced
called as “Holes in the lung” that is a dubbed version of the term ‘post-COVID
fibrosis’. This term in a medical language called as post-ARDS [acute
respiratory distress syndrome] fibrosis,” according to Dr. Lori Shan (transplant
pulmonologist) at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical
Center.
Now the question arises that what is a hole in the lungs/ post-COVID fibrosis/ post- ARDS?
It is a pneumonia-like condition in which the fluid builds up in
tiny air sacs of the lungs which we call alveoli. The exchange of gases takes
place in this alveoli. Due to the fluid build condition in alveoli the oxygen level
decreases in the bloodstream. This condition if sustain for a long time can lead
to organ failure.
Dr. Shah
says that this Post-COVID fibrosis severely damages the lungs which are an irreversible
process. This causes cough, shortness of breath called severe functional
limitations thus patients need oxygen supply due to a fall in oxygen level.
In
Chicago many such cases were reported, where the lung damage observed was very extensive
required lung transplantation.
a)
According to his views, the immune system of a host infected with
the COVID-19 prepare the minute blood clots, which prevent blood movements in
certain segments of the lung.
b)
He says that the body’s immune response against the virus generates
the inflammatory debris (dead cells tiny balls) that occupy as clots in capillary-level
vessels.
Both this condition results death of a certain portion of lungs
resulting in hole formation in infected patients.
In the next article, "https://www.abhiguru.com/2020/09/ards-effects-in-covid-19-save-patient.html" I have discussed the prevention of hole formation in lungs and also talked about: a person who is at risk factor for such conditions.
