ARDS effects in COVID-19? save patient part 2

 

COVID-19 pandemic has affected the livelihood of commons in this half-year tenure. In the last article, we discussed the formation of a hole in the lungs due to the COVID-19 as a post-traumatic condition with the title- "corona-causes-hole-in-lungs" save patient part 1":

In this article, we will talk about the reason behind the post-ARDS [acute respiratory distress syndrome] fibrosis/ hole in lungs/ Lung fibrosis.  

The death rate is increased due to secondary infection impression in corona infected patients. But the outbreak of coronavirus is now keeping its souvenir in recovered patients. Most recovered people from COVID-19 are showing some residual elemental components such as cough or shortness of breath. While few infection cured populations are left with excessive lung damage and some end up with the fibrosis of the lung.

The Lancet published an article titled “Pulmonary fibrosis secondary to COVID-19: A call to arms? Trusted Source”. In this article, they focused on the first cases of Wuhan, China. They published shocking figures as 26 percent of patients were kept in ICU and 61 percent of patients developed ARDS. This fibrosis later developed as chronic inflammation of the lungs.

Further, it illustrated that 40 percent of people affected with COVID-19 developed ARDS in which 20 percent were in severe condition.

Which patients are at the risk factor of ARDS?

This part is not known to doctors working globally in the field of COVID-19 treatment. Still, some prediction was proposed in this regards as-

Most infected people will get cured without any severe form. Some are getting automatically cured without showing any symptoms such mob we are calling asymptomatic patients.

The patients from ICU kept on ventilators or ECMO machine (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) are more prone to ARDS. The sicker you get by COVID-19 the greater chances you will end up with ARDS, according to Dr. Zachary Kon (surgical director) lung transplantation at NYU Langone’s. Even some patients from Chicago after their lung transplant exhibited such symptoms according to Dr. Z Kon. Other effects observed inpatient recovered from a severe form of COVID-19 were

• post-intensive care syndrome
• a lasting impact on the kidneys, heart, and brain

Conclusion

We cannot prevent the ARDS effect from a severe form of COVID-19, but can take some preventive measures such as:

1)    Social distancing,

2)    Sanitation

3)    Wearing mask
